Obi and Theresa

In Nigeria, we have a national service program where recent graduates leave their comfort zones to serve in communities far from home, contributing to national development. Little did we know that this mandatory journey would also become the beginning of our forever.

Our paths first crossed in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria, where we were both assigned to the same school for our national service. At first, we were just two young recent graduates navigating the uncertainties of a new environment. But surprisingly — through casual conversations, we discovered that we had both grown up in Northern Nigeria. The real shocker? At one point, we had even lived in the same neighborhood but never met. It felt like God had been weaving our stories separately, only to bring us together at the perfect time.

As we settled into our service year, we found ourselves drawn to the same cause—serving in the Catholic community organization, helping new corps members adjust to their places of assignment. Side by side, we guided others, yet unknowingly, we were also building something beautiful between us. From long walks after community meetings to late-night conversations about faith, dreams, and the future, our bond deepened.

By the time our national service ended, what had started as a friendship had blossomed. Guided by divine grace, we began a heartfelt courtship that would eventually carry us far from the familiar landscapes of Nigeria. Even as we pursued graduate studies in different corners of the world, the distance only deepened our bond. In 2020, we sealed our love in marriage, and soon after, we found a new home in Canada—a place enriched by a warm, vibrant Catholic community and dear friends. Today, our lives sparkle with joy, especially with the laughter of our two-year-old son as our greatest blessing.
